Killing time, Registering new Domains, reflecting on a busy 30 days!
November 8, 2007 | Author: Mark | Filed under: Everything Else
Today - I actually had a full block of like 45 free minutes that I had to sit back and find something to do. OK, really, I have like 100 things to do, but wanted to stop and take an hour or so to put down on paper all of things I have forgotten to do!
First things first - had to call my Dad and see how he is doing today! Turns out he is sleeping… so the 15 minutes I was going to talk with him gets pushed back to later this afternoon when he wakes up again! I will be flying back to stay with him again on Tuesday and will stay through the Thanksgiving holiday to turn up cans of Assure for our dinner! I wonder if it comes in Ham or Turkey flavors?
The next “quick” thingĀ I wanted to do was look back and prioritize some of the projects that have been put on hold for some time now. Turns out that since I started the Niche Store Process series, I have registered no less than 24 new domain names for niche store websites! 6 of them are for a single niche market with many different categories that will all be fruitful! The others are just knee-jerk domains that I bought as I browsed and saw opportunity. Now I need to add those 24 to the list of hundreds already in my personal BANS queue.
During this “free-time” I also had to revisit a project I did for a BANS account over the past 2 weeks. 40 BANS installations and custom header graphics for each of the sites. Whew - it took a bit of time to get them all active but it was finally completed earlier this week! The project involved a custom template with the addition of the custom headers… and was time consuming to complete, especially with the travelling. Turns out it was a great project that has rolled into 40 more BANS sites in a similar niche, as well as an additional 40 sites with a different script (non-bans) It should keep me busy again for the next week or two.
I also took some time earlier this week and updated all of the Build a Niche Store Services over on the Niche Builder site. I realize I still have quite a bit to do on that page in order to clarify the services and what a buyer can expect when they purchase service from me. Some of the explanations are not 100% completed, but I have it written down for completion!
Aside from the Process series, I decided to write an indepth series on how to create a custom layout template for your own niche site, including some basic tips on slicing images. That series is still in the very early stages and the biggst hurdle I face is that I don’t want to explain everything by using my own applications when the readers will not have the same graphics program to work with. I use Macromedia Fireworks, which is somewhat like Photoshop and several others out there. I think Gimp is a free graphics application, but I have never used it…
Lets see… what else is on my “don’t forget to do” paper?
- Catch up in the BANS forums - its been 3 weeks!
- Write a search MOD to capture all searches in the BANS stores
- Optimize 10-12 of my own stores! - Threw them up and forgot about them
- Work with Kim on optimizing her stores - she is doing AWESOME.
- Park my car in the warehouse for the winter - Its a Cobra Mustang, I wont let it see snow!
- Probably 25 other things I forgot about since my last thought… Doh!
Anyhow… I better get back to work!

Mark, don’t forget to sleep, you have really got a busy schedule.Good luck and thanks for keeping us up to date . Otis
I honestly don’t know how you find the time to do all that you are doing! That being said, I can’t wait to read your instructions on custom templates as I have no clue how to do that but really want to.
Just out of curiosity, regarding the mods you create, how do you know how to code them? That may be too hard to answer due to technicalities but I’m fascinated by you and the other members who figure out how to do things and then code them.
Hi Rochelle -
The custom template series is going to be very detailed and indepth on taking a blank image, creating a working image so to speak, and then chopping that image into the sections needed for the BANS site.
In regard to the coding… it just comes with time. I never went though technical school or college for programming and just picked up what I know from a few “Dummies” books and having the need to change code.
You too, after doing BANS MODS and other html coding, will see how it becomes easier over time. I started with asp vbscript about 12 years ago, did’nt get into php until I had to for work purposes…
Thanks again for the nice comments…
Mark
Mark,
I’ve already started to see how the mod coding works but not enough to do any myself. But the light is turning on. One thing that is frustrating me, though, is that I can usually take the properies of a site I like and plug it into Dreamweaver and figure out how to do the aspects that appeal to me. That’s not the case with css stylesheets. Any chance you are planning a how-to on creating our own stylesheets, headers, and footers? (crosses fingers and hopes)
