HostGator Hosting for your Niche Website

October 8, 2007 | Author: Mark | Filed under: Build a Niche Store, Everything Else

During our segment yesterday, I discussed a few ways to help find and register a domain name through GoDaddy. Hopefully, it went smoothly for everyone who had never registered a domain in the past. Today, we will talk about HostGator, one of the best hosting providers for your new domain and Build a Niche Store(s).

Lets get started!

What is a hosting provider or host? This is actually a very common question that deserves a few lines of basic explanation. Just like your own computer, your website has to reside on a computer as well. The difference, is that the hosting system is optimized to deliver web pages to your visitors. There are also security concerns with running a website that most good hosting companies take care of for you, which allows you to concentrate on the more important things… like working on your site!

Once you have registered your new domain, you have to have a place to host it. After you setup your hosting account, you will be provided a set of “Name Servers” often called “Pointers” to direct your domain name. A name server is just that, it holds all the information about where users can find your website files.

It works like this…

  1. Someone types your domain name into their browser: www. yourdomainname .com
  2. GoDaddy, the Registrar, looks for your “Name Server” to direct the request.
  3. After being forwarded to the “Name Server”, it forwards the request to the actual server machine that holds your website files.
  4. The server machine, recognizing the domain name, forwards the request to a folder on its hard drive that contains your website files.

If you are on a good host like HostGator, ALL of this happens in milliseconds and is transparent to the visitor!

At this point, I was going to create several HostGator video tutorials on how to sign up and setup your accounts. As a matter of fact, while I was completing the first one, I found they already exist right at the source! If you want to review some of these sections today, it will be a great primer for what will be discussing tomorrow!

Sign up for Hosting for your Build a Niche Store
The first step to get your store active on the web is going to require that you have a hosting account. Hosting for Build a Niche Store is seamless with HostGator. Once you arrive at the homepage, click on the Web Hosting link in the top menu, and choose “Order Now” from the “Baby” column. This $10/Month plan has more than enough features for as many Niche Stores as you want to develop.

After you have completed the information form, you will receive an email from HostGator that contains all the information you need to begin working on your new website. If you have gotten this far, you should also have the Build a Niche Store script by now. If you have not yet purchased Build a Niche Store, now is a good time to do so!

Tomorrow - we will be uploading our script to the server and getting deeper into setting up the server for our website!

Mark, I have a totally un-related question and I hope you can help.
How do I get to display the posts as titles only on the wordpress home page.
Like on your site - you have the latest post full page on index page but the older posts display only the title.
I enjoy reading your posts and I thank you for all the information you provide.

Hi Jenny -

Shoot me a link to your blog… It is likely something in your settings or the template that you are using.
