My Newest Build a Niche Store - Sorry for hiding!

September 11, 2007 | Author: Mark | Filed under: Build a Niche Store, Everything Else

Hi All -

I know I disappeared for a few days - fortunately, Kim came by and pushed the rock over and I am back out from under it! :-) Actually, I took a few well needed days away over the Labor Day holiday weekend and had a bit of catching up to do on other projects!

During my hiatus, I also broke my own rules and launched a very developed BANS store! Race Cars for Sale! During the process of building this site, I wanted to see if customization of the new Build A Niche Store 2.0 would be as easy as the original…

So… what have I done to this new store and just how long did it take?

First let me say that I have approximately 8-10 hours into the site at this point and will spend another 2-4 on finalizing the main menus and content pages. There were MANY modifications to the original index.php, frontcontrol.php and css files that control the overall look and feel.

 Some key notables:

  • Created and added Main Menu Bar at top of page
  • Created custom template graphics and icons for site
  • Custom search box designed to use less room and give fewer choices
  • Custom eBay signup logo (You are all welcome to use it)
  • Custom menu system with css list styles
  • Several text changes for SEO
  • Added page H1 title at top and bottom of each page
  • Remained W3C compliant! (That was actually not even a goal!)
  • Several minor changes I dont even remember!

In addition to the visual changes above, I made several code changes to accomodate my own anal preferences! At this point, I have about 290-400 key phrases I will be integrating into this site over the next 3-4 days (15 minutes at a time) as well as some unique content one of my sons is writing for the many different pages of the site.

Wise old Mark that I am… I also regged another domain, http://www.racecars-forsale.com/ (Bare-bones BANS Site) that I am going to do a minimum of customization and use it as a comparison to the Race Cars for Sale site for the changes I made.

Comments are always welcome!

Mark

Excellent work on the site. I am very impressed.

I especially like how you integrated the advertising into the page. It is very fluid and should suppliment your income going forward.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone…

Tom: I was hoping to achieve a fluid look and feel with the site. I didn’t know for sure about the header graphic advertisement though, I thought there may be too much “Flashing” going on…

Randy: I created the graphics myself… of course, I did use a few images I found on the web, cropped them down to a mask and proceeded from there.
